Background Information
From time-to-time GBA is faced with unbudgeted costs to address particular issues that we need to weigh in on. Voluntary contributions provide GBA with the ability to take action on these special projects, which are usually important initiatives for protecting the Bay. Here are some examples:
- From time to time one or more GBA association will ask for support from GBA to counter a precedent setting development. Recent examples are Fisher Harbour (commercial port expansion), Macey Bay (trailer park) and a possible golf course development on an outer island. In some cases, legal and other consultancy costs may be required to effectively address the issues.
- Coastal protection is a key priority for GBA and is a wide-ranging topic that may involve the need for special reports or investigations of issues that affect us all. Such reports or investigations will often need to be completed by a consultant with the requisite skills, knowledge and credentials. Current potential projects include a review of the coastal municipal structures on the east and north coasts of Georgian Bay, including planning and septic inspections/management.
- Issues relating to Water Levels and Water Quality arise almost continuously. Related files include aquaculture and dock foam. GBA advocacy efforts do not usually require lobbyist or legal services, but that is not always the case. Therefore, where such services are needed to properly address a vital water-related matter, having the flexibility to meet these costs could be very important. Current potential projects include legislative changes to ban dock foam, advocating for one Great Lakes wide (water levels) control board and developing technology that will greatly improve water quality and water levels monitoring.
Although not necessarily requiring any voluntary contributions, you may wish to review our current top priorities, which vary over time and can be found here.
