Great Lakes Are Dealing with Record Low Ice
Warmer water temperatures this summer combined with a warmer than normal winter so far means the Great Lakes are seeing record low ice. According to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), the Great Lakes total ice coverage is currently sitting at 3.9%. This same time last year, ice coverage was 11.3%, and the year before 18.5% putting the projected ice coverage for this year way below the 53% average. Experts are predicting that by the end of winter, less than one-third of the Great Lakes will be covered by ice. Read more here.
