The current federal government, primarily through Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has been actively supporting environmental protection studies, research and projects across the country. Georgian Bay organizations such as Georgian Bay Biosphere (GBB), Georgian Bay Land Trust (GBLT) and Georgian Bay Forever (GBF) have been able to benefit from this support. This has enabled moves forward on wetlands, water quality, and bio-diversity etc.
In 2017, ECCC launched Assessing and Enhancing the Resilience of Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands which concludes in 2022, see the reports here., and a summary: [link to factsheet]. GBA, GBB, GBLT and GBF continue to be active participants in this project.
Land Protection Target
Canada has also signed on to the international targets to protect ecosystems by expanding protected land and marine environments. GBA has been active in supporting organizations looking for sufficient funding for these objectives, see here. This request was successfully confirmed in the recent federal budget. More specifically examples of support for Georgian Bay land protection can be found here: [link to Shanaga Island IPCA project] and here.
