GBA Suggested Questions for Candidates Running in the 2021 Federal Election

We have a Federal election on September 20. GBA encourages all of our Canadian members to engage the candidates in their home ridings on Georgian Bay-related issues and exercise your franchise by voting.

GBA has prepared the following questions that we are asking candidates for office, and suggest you do the same.

Water Quality

  • The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) has identified many priorities that the Canadian and American federal governments should address to improve and protect water quality. Many concerns have been raised that more needs to be done to prevent harmful chemicals and plastics from entering the Great Lakes. Do you support increased action and funding to address those threats?
  • In this respect, the “Action Plan 2030 to protect the Great Lakes” has proposed that Canada should increase its funding for the Great Lakes in line with the US, see here. Do you support the proposals in this Action Plan?

Invasive Species

  • The Canadian government has responsibility to work with the Province of Ontario and our American partners on the Great Lakes to prevent Asian Carp and other invasive species from entering the Great Lakes. Will you support increasing the resources the Canadian government provides to keep Asian Carp and other invasive species out of our Lakes?

Land & Water Protection

  • Do you support protecting at least 25% of the terrestrial areas and inland water, and 25% of the marine and coastal areas, of Canada by 2025, and increasing the level of protection thereafter?

Climate Change

  • Do you support action by the federal government to mitigate and address climate change impacts that affect Georgian Bay, such as air and water temperatures, and extreme weather events that impact water levels, municipal infrastructure and septic systems?
