Norm Miller's Bill to Ensure Kids 12 and Under Wear Lifejackets Passes Second Reading
Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Norm Miller’s private member’s bill to make life jackets mandatory for children 12 and under passed second reading on February 22, 2022. Bill 76, the Lifejackets for Life Act, 2021 requires parents and guardians to ensure that their children who are 12 years of age or younger wear a personal flotation device or lifejacket while on a pleasure boat that is underway or while being towed behind a pleasure boat using recreational water equipment.
MPP Miller consulted with many groups before putting the bill forward including GBA, the Parry Sound-Muskoka Area Lifesaving Society, the Lake of Bays Association, Parachute Canada, the Canada Safety Council, Safe Quiet Lakes, as well as Dr. Suzanne Beno from the Canadian Pediatric Society’s Injury Prevention Committee, Cara McNulty from Lifejackets for Life, and Dan Mulligan, a retired OPP helicopter pilot who inspired the idea for the bill.
