Red Bottles are Helping GBF Track Trash on the Bay

Georgian Bay Forever (GBF) is asking boaters, paddlers and beachgoers to leave red blender bottles that may be bobbing around or washed up on shore alone. Part of their Tracking Trash Trips project, these red blender bottles have GPS trackers which are helping GBF find out how and where trash is dispersed throughout the Bay.

These bottles will be deployed from various locations five to seven times over the summer from offshore and onshore locations. The GPS bottles ping their location hourly, but when they become stationary, their location is shared every six hours. A live map on Georgian Bay Forever’s website tracks their whereabouts.

The data will be analyzed against components like currents, wind velocity and weather conditions to create models of the trash trips. The models will then be used to create an interactive map that allows users to see the common routes waste takes from certain locations.
