ReNEW Initiative Aims to Extract Forever Chemicals from Great Lakes
Current, a Chicago-based “innovation hub” has been awarded a $160 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop techniques to remove harmful chemicals from the Great Lakes. Their Great Lakes ReNEW initiative aims to invent new methods of separating nickel, cobalt, lithium, nitrogen and PFAs from the water supply to ensure that the Great Lakes will be a sustainable source of clean water in the future. Under ReNEW’s proposal, these chemicals and minerals would be repurposed by manufacturers.
The grant, which will be disbursed over 10 years, is part of the inaugural class of NSF Regional Innovation Engines. The state of Illinois has also pledged $2 million to support the ReNEW program.
