Georgian Bay Biosphere: Leading the Charge Against Road Mortality

13 of the 19 reptile species found in eastern Georgian Bay are considered at risk due to the impacts of habitat fragmentation, climate change and human activity. For reptiles in the Bay, road mortality is a huge risk.

Since 2020, the Georgian Bay Biosphere has been taking bold steps to protect the Bay’s incredible wildlife. Through projects including:

  • researching and monitoring road mortality to develop conservation strategies
  • testing and implementing fencing designed to prevent reptiles from accessing roadways
  • training construction and hydro workers to detect and safeguard turtle nests
  • providing education and working with municipalities on construction projects

These efforts appear to have paid off as 10,258 turtle eggs have been collected and incubated since 2020 with 7,858 hatchlings being released back into the wild.

Read more about their efforts here.
