Interfor Scraps Glyphosate Spraying Plans in Northern Ontario Forests

Interfor, a global forest products company, has announced that it will not proceed with its plan to spray glyphosate over forests in northern Ontario this year, following opposition from Indigenous communities and local municipalities. The decision comes amid concerns over the potential harm caused by the herbicide.

The Traditional Ecological Knowledge elders (TEK) held a “Stop the Spray” protest, voicing concerns about glyphosate’s impact on biodiversity, traditional farming, gathering of medicinal plants, and spiritual ceremonies. The TEK elders and other Indigenous communities have asserted their right to be involved in land management decisions that affect their communities, underscoring their rights to self-determination and informed consent. While Interfor’s decision is seen as a win for opponents, the company’s vice-president, Andrew Horahan, stated the company remains committed to responsible forest management and open dialogue with stakeholders.

Glyphosate, a powerful weedkiller, has been permitted by Health Canada but has sparked debate over its potential health and environmental impacts. Critics argue that glyphosate can harm not only weeds but also other plants, animals, and even humans. In fact, the World Health Organization’s cancer research agency has classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans”.
