Celebrating World Lake Day: A Call to Action for Freshwater Conservation
August 27, 2025, marks the inaugural World Lake Day, a recognition by the United Nations to raise awareness about the vital importance lakes and their ecosystems. As Canadians, we’re fortunate to have over nine million lakes, but these but we also face significant environmental threats to these vital ecosystems.
Lakes are the lifeblood of our planet. They serve as a crucial source of fresh water, play a key role in maintaining biodiversity, contribute to climate regulation, and provide recreational and economic opportunities. However, Canadian lakes are under increasing environmental stresses from issues such as pollution, invasive species, and climate change.
In a thought-provoking Globe & Mail op-ed piece, experts John P. Smol, Sapna Sharma, and Steven J. Cooke highlight the urgent need for collective action to protect our lakes and their ecosystems. They argue that lakes are not only essential for our environment but also for our communities and future generations.
