December 21st Water Levels Report
Temperatures ranged from 5 to 15 degrees above average last weekend in the Great Lakes basin. The satellite image below was taken on Dec 15th and shows virtually no ice cover. Later satellite images are mainly cloud covered, but show no increase in ice cover. It appears that the previous ice cover (which was reported to us) has largely melted with the higher temperatures in the past 2 weeks.
Lake Michigan/Huron’s water level is 2 inches lower than it was a month ago, 2 inches above last year’s levels, and is predicted to fall a further 2 inches over the next 30 days, as is usual for this time of year.
Lake Superior’s outflow through the St. Mary’s River is predicted to be above average in December. Lake Michigan-Huron’s outflow into the St. Clair River and the outflow of Lake St. Clair through the Detroit River are projected to be above average.
