Avian Flu is Ravaging Caspian Tern Populations in Lake Michigan

Wildlife biologists in Lake Michigan are finding whole colonies of Caspian terns dying of the highly pathogenic avian flu. Although in recent years the bird’s population has been growing, scientists estimate that as much as 64% of the adult population in Wisconsin has succumbed to this contagious disease.

Caspian terns nest very close together which may make them more susceptible to air borne disease, but scientists remain baffled at why Caspian tern populations appear to be hit harder than other close-nesting seabirds.

Caspian terns are the largest of the two main tern species that nest on Georgian Bay.
