Changes to LPAT Management Appear to Favour Developers Over Environmental Protection

The Ontario government has appointed a former real estate development lobbyist to the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT), while declining to renew the appointments of four other adjudicators with environmental backgrounds. LPAT, formerly known as the Ontario Municipal Board, mediates disputes between developers and local municipalities, hearing appeals on a variety of contentious issues such as land use planning and zoning bylaws.

These changes appear to favour developer interests over environmental protections and pose further challenges for coastal Georgian Bay municipalities dealing with development applications that could have negative environmental impacts. Read about it here.
