Foxconn/Racine Water Withdrawal

A Taiwanese company, Foxconn is planning to construct a plasma screen manufacturing facility at Mount Pleasant, near Racine, on the coast of Lake Michigan. The State of Wisconsin is providing $3 billion for this $10 billion project, which will yield 13,000 long term tech sector jobs + 11,000 construction jobs. Amongst the numerous environmental issues associated with this project, the City of Racine intends to withdraw 7 million gallons of water per day (gpd) from the lake, 5.8 million of which will be used by the plant. Out of this, 2.7 million gpd are projected to be lost, mainly due to evaporation from the gas power station they intend to build at the site. GBA has joined our US ENGO friends in voicing our opposition to this breach of the Great Lakes Compact (between Ontario, Quebec & the US states bordering the Great Lakes) and other matters associated with this project, see our letter: GBA submission may 28 2018 re Foxconn.
