GBA Releases Report on Models of Protected and Conserved Areas in Support of Vision 2050 Project

GBA has released a report titled Models of Protected and Conserved Areas in the Georgian Bay Region, Canada, and Beyond. Written in support of work on GBA’s Vision 2050 project, the report presents a comprehensive analysis of 16 conservation models from across Canada and internationally that are potentially relevant to the Georgian Bay region. The report was written by Kate Bentley-Taylor, Coordinator for Vision 2050.

The Georgian Bay Vision 2050 Project aims to develop a vision and concept proposal for stronger protection of the eastern and northern Georgian Bay coastal area. Our mission is to conserve and protect the unique natural environment, ecosystems and biodiversity of the region for the future, while supporting sustainable communities in the region.

The conservation models range from government-led and Indigenous-led efforts to privately governed frameworks, and they explore the legal, financial, and planning structures that support long-term protection. The report assesses each model’s conservation outcomes, strengths, and limitations. The models covered include the Niagara Escarpment, Ontario’s Greenbelt, parks, land trusts such as GBLT, the Stockholm Archipelago and other large-scale protected areas.

Developed to support conservation analysis under Vision 2050, the report is intended as a resource for GBA, our member associations and our conservation partner organizations as we explore pathways for better protecting Georgian Bay into the future. You can review and download the report here.
