GBA Suggested Questions for Candidates Running in the Federal Election

We have a Federal election on October 21st. The GBA encourages all of our Canadian members to engage the candidates in their home ridings on Georgian Bay-related issues and exercise your franchise by voting.

GBA has prepared the following questions that we are asking candidates for office, and suggest you do the same.

Water Quality

  • The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) has identified many priorities that the Canadian and American federal governments should address to improve and protect water quality. Many concerns have been raised that more needs to be done to prevent harmful chemicals and plastics from entering the Great Lakes. Do you support increased action and funding to address those threats?
  • Despite the fact that the US states do not permit open net cage aquaculture operations on the US side of the Great Lakes, citing water quality concerns, the Canadian and Ontario governments are ramping up support for more development of this industry in Lake Huron.
  • Do you support a review by the Department of Fisheries & Ocean and Environment Canada of the operational practices of fresh water fish farms and the standards they must meet?
  • Do you support ensuring that this industry is compliant with international guidelines, GLWQA, and the Fisheries Act?

Invasive Species

  • The Canadian government has responsibility to work with the Province of Ontario and our American partners on the Great Lakes to avoid Asian Carp entering the Lakes. Will you support increasing the resources the Canadian government provides to keep Asian Carp out of our Lakes?

Land & Water Protection

  • Do you support continuing to protect at least 17% of terrestrial areas and inland water, and 10% of marine and coastal areas of Canada by 2020, and increasing the level of protection thereafter?

Climate Change

  • Do you support action by the federal government to mitigate and address climate change impacts that affect Georgian Bay, such as air and water temperatures, and extreme weather events that impact water levels, municipal infrastructure and septic systems?

Would you rather cast your vote at the cottage?  FOCA has details on how you can change where you vote here.
