Good News for Fisheries, Bad News for Sea Lampreys
After decades of funding shortfalls Canada has finally stepped up to the plate to fully fund their commitments to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, whose main funding requirement is the annual sea lamprey control program. Given the setbacks caused by COVID to this program, Canada’s cash injection is well timed.
The funding is part of Thursdays federal budget announcement that will see $44.9 million over five years, starting in 2022-23 to protect Great Lakes fishery, and $9 million a year go to Fisheries and Oceans Canada to support the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
