Incorporating TEK Into the Legal System Could Help Bolster Animal Cruelty Laws
There is much to learn from Traditional Indigenous Knowledge (TEK). As some prominent legal minds advocate to see Indigenous legal orders and traditions become integrated with Canada’s concept of the law, animal rights may get a boost.
Current Canadian laws view animals as property, whereas Indigenous cultures revere animals viewing them as sentient beings capable of thought and feelings. Incorporation a more non-anthropomorphic viewpoint could one day lay the foundation for developing stronger animal rights protections in Canadian law.
