Need help finding fish?

Then look no further and pick up your smart phone or lap top and click on www.ontario.ca/fishonline This new app, created by the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Fisheries, is your guide to over 18,000 lakes and rivers in Ontario.

You can renew or apply for a new fishing licence, search for fish species you want to catch, read a guide to cleaning and eating fish, find public access points and boat launching sites including fishing regulations and species of fish specific to where you want to fish as well as protected fish sanctuaries.

For the shorelines of Georgian Bay waters, tributaries and local lakes simply go to Fisheries Management Zones 14 and 15 and click on the fish/waterbody symbols in the area you intend to fish and continue clicking until the name of the waterbody is identified. Then by clicking “Information” a menu specific to that lake/river will list the fish swimming in this body of water and, if available, a monitoring report on the latest fish netting results as well as valuable depth contours suggesting where fish are most likely to be.

Also listed are GPS coordinates and even a local weather forecast.  Should you not have had the chance or opportunity to experience catching a fish then you can take a Learn to Fish Program by clicking www.ontario.ca/learntofish . You can even borrow fishing equipment for free by visiting www.tackleshare.com.

We are indeed fortunate to have a multitude of lakes and variety of fresh water fish in Ontario where you can enjoy the passion and serenity of fishing. The technology and opportunity are there and now it’s up to you!
