New NASA Satellite Could Foster Better Understanding of the Great Lakes

A new high resolution satellite launched in December will allow scientists to study the great lakes in high resolution. The product of a 20-year collaboration between NASA and France’s Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales, NASA’s Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite is approximately the size of an SUV and measures earth’s surface water with extremely high clarity.
SWOT can measure surface currents and water levels across larger areas, but will also collect data on smaller water events like fronts and eddies that previous instruments could not detect.
NASA has a 3-year-mission planned for the craft and the first data is expected to be public this summer.
