New Report Calls for Standardized Monitoring of Microplastics in Great Lakes

A recent report from the International Joint Commission’s Great Lakes Science Advisory Board recommends a basin-wide effort to monitor microplastic pollution in the Great Lakes. The report proposes standard operating procedures and a risk-assessment framework to better understand and address microplastic pollution.

Microplastics are present in all five Great Lakes, and current monitoring efforts lack standardized methods, making it difficult to assess the effectiveness of pollution management efforts. The report recommends implementing routine monitoring for microplastics, adopting a common definition, and designating microplastics as a Chemical of Mutual Concern under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

Standardized monitoring and assessment will help evaluate the effectiveness of efforts to reduce microplastic pollution and mitigate its impacts on the Great Lakes ecosystem.
