October 19th Water Levels

Temperatures have been well below normal throughout the last week in the Great Lakes basin, and this will likely continue into next week. Many places in the northern and western portions of the basin saw their first snowfall for the season in the past week. This weekend, two cold fronts are forecasted to pass through the basin, bringing the chance for rain and snow showers. Total precipitation for the week is forecasted to be less than an inch across the basin, but precipitation for the month is already above its monthly average in the Lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron basins.

In the last month, Lake Michigan-Huron declined 2 inches. The level of all the lakes are currently above their long-term average October levels. Lakes Michigan-Huron is near its level of a year ago and, in the coming month, is forecasted to decline 2 inches.

In October Lake Superior’s outflow through the St. Mary’s River and Lake Michigan-Huron’s outflow into the St. Clair River are predicted to be above average.
