Parks Canada Announces New Mooring Restrictions to Address Floating Homes
After public consultation, Parks Canada issued a Notice of Mooring Restrictions to address long-term anchoring on the Rideau Canal and Trent-Severn Waterway. The restrictions on the historic canals took effect on May 1, 2024, and are intended to align Parks Canada regulations with those recently approved by the province of Ontario. These mooring restrictions will also give Parks Canada greater control over floating accommodations that are not primarily used for navigation on its waterways.
The Notice of Mooring Restrictions provides that vessels may moor on the Ontario Waterways without express authorization from Parks Canada, as long as the requirements set out in the Notice and Polices are met. All other mooring provisions will remain the same for property owners and boats at lock stations and licensed marinas.
Although the Trent-Severn Waterway is not on Georgian Bay, this notice is another step to getting the right regulations in place with all levels of federal, provincial and municipal government and provides a useful precedent which will help our ongoing efforts on Floating Homes regulations. Many thanks to all GBA members who submitted comments to support these new regulations to help make this happen.
