Protect Your Cottage from Wildfires this August
Consider a Cottage Fire PumpA fire pump can be a vital tool in protecting your cottage and property from wildfires. Having a reliable fire pump on hand can help you respond quickly and effectively in case of an emergency.
If you have a fire pump, test it regularly and make sure others using the cottage know how to operate the pump. Regularly maintain the pump, keep it filled with gas, and store it in an easily accessible space.
Equip Your Cottage
Make sure your cottage is equipped with:
- Detectors: Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed near sleeping areas and fuel-burning appliances.
- Fire Extinguishers: Keep fire extinguishers in your kitchen, near fireplaces, and near exit doors. Know how to use them.
- Fire Safety Plan: Develop a fire safety plan with your family, including a map of your home, emergency exits, and a meeting point outside (get tips to help make a plan here). Inform guests about your plan.
The FireSmart program is a Canadian initiative that aims to educate and empower individuals, communities, and organizations to reduce the risk of wildfires. Developed by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC), FireSmart provides resources and guidance on how to prepare homes and properties for wildfires.
