Protect Your Cottage from Wildfires this August

So far this August, there have been several small fires and close calls around the Bay. With tinder-dry conditions out there, the fire danger rating around the Bay remains high with Township of Georgian Bay, the Township of The Archipelago and Killarney issuing complete fire bans. Now is the time to review your fire safety plan and take action to protect your cottage and loved ones.
Consider a Cottage Fire Pump

A fire pump can be a vital tool in protecting your cottage and property from wildfires. Having a reliable fire pump on hand can help you respond quickly and effectively in case of an emergency.

If you have a fire pump, test it regularly and make sure others using the cottage know how to operate the pump. Regularly maintain the pump, keep it filled with gas, and store it in an easily accessible space.

Equip Your Cottage

Make sure your cottage is equipped with:

  • Detectors: Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed near sleeping areas and fuel-burning appliances.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Keep fire extinguishers in your kitchen, near fireplaces, and near exit doors. Know how to use them.
  • Fire Safety Plan: Develop a fire safety plan with your family, including a map of your home, emergency exits, and a meeting point outside (get tips to help make a plan here). Inform guests about your plan.
Implement FireSmart Strategies

The FireSmart program is a Canadian initiative that aims to educate and empower individuals, communities, and organizations to reduce the risk of wildfires. Developed by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC), FireSmart provides resources and guidance on how to prepare homes and properties for wildfires.

FireSmart provides a range of resources, including:
  • Manuals and guides: Detailed guides on how to prepare homes and properties for wildfires.
  • Videos and tutorials: Educational videos and tutorials on FireSmart principles and practices.
  • Assessment tools: Tools to help individuals assess their home and property’s risk of wildfire.
  • Community support: Support for communities to develop FireSmart plans and initiatives.
