Trump Administration Proposes to cut Great Lakes Funding from $300 million per Annum to $10 million
GBA supports those who are petitioning the US government to fight against the proposed Trump cuts to Great Lakes spending. These are funds that not only address the cleanup of toxic hot spots on the US side of the Lakes and the nutrient runoff that contributes to the persistent toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie but they help pay for the barriers necessary to keep Asian Carp out of the Lakes. There is hope that this proposal can be defeated. Last December Congress authorized the continued funding of the Great Lakes Clean Up Fund until 2021 at the $300 million per year level. We believe that this means that Congress could override Trump’s budget in this regard. And we know that there are a lot of Republican politicians in the Great Lakes Basin that support the $300 million per year program. We are encouraging all of our US based members to write to their elected Federal representatives asking them to vote to maintain the $300 million per year funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
