January 5th Water Levels Report

Unseasonably warm temperatures were experienced in the past week throughout the Great Lakes basin. On average, temperatures ranged from 2 to 8°F above normal for the northern half of the basin and 8 to 12°F above normal for the southern half of the basin.

In the last month, water levels on Lake Michigan-Huron have declined by 2 inches. All of the lakes, except Lake Superior, are above their water levels from this time last year. In the coming month, seasonal declines are forecasted to continue for all of the lakes except Lake Ontario. Lake Michigan-Huron is forecasted to drop 2 inches over the next month.

Lake Superior’s outflow through the St. Mary’s River is predicted to be above average in January. Lake Michigan-Huron’s outflow into the St. Clair River and the outflow of Lake St. Clair through the Detroit River are projected to be above average.

Due to the continued US government shutdown, NOAA satellite images are still unavailable.

Best Regards

Rupert
